Just Received Notice Sometime around July 2000, I was suddenly in so much pain again. I could only walk if I used the cane and the pain was constant and intense. I couldn't put weight on it, and I just hurt a lot. I have no insurance, and I had my hip replacement done at Riverside Regional Medical Center, which is the County Hospital, in Moreno Valley, CA. I made an appointment and went over there (45 minutes from where I live). I had x-rays, and was told to come back a week later when the doctor that did my surgery was back from vacation. When it was time for my appointment, I was unable to get on the County Hospital van. There was no room. I was unable to get on the van, the next week. At this point, I'm off the cane and simply taking a ton of Motrin again. Sometime around December, I don't remember I have the appointment to see the doctor for a check up. I hurt all the time, and I thought I was supposed to. Last
week, I received a certified letter, asking me to come in for
an evaluation regarding the fact that I have one of the recalled
Lot number hips. Has Sulzer Implant In Extreme Pain I am 39 years old and had hip replacement surgery last July 2000. I was the only one in my age group at the hospital having this type of surgery, everyone else was between 70 & 80. Today almost 8 months later most of my fellow ward mates from my hospital days are square dancing, park strolling and enjoying the new found freedom their hip implant has afforded them. I on the other hand have trouble putting on my socks everymorning, can hardly lift my leg and suffer extreme pain when getting up from a chair. I still walk with crutches and sleep with a pillow between my legs to lessen the pain when the joint moves. I'm not 70 or 80 I used to be a distance runner, skier and enjoyed tennis on a regular basis, I work in sales which requires me to walk a lot inorder to earn a living. I have been told that I have the Sulzer implant. John R. 40 Degree Slip in Socket with Faulty Hip- 2 Revision Surgeries required I am a 42 year old active male. On 12 June 2000, I had my initial hip replacement. By the end of June I could barely move. I had pain in the groin, back of the leg, you name it and it hurt. I could not "lift" my leg high enough to get into a walk-in shower. All the X-rays showed that everything appeared fine. Finally in mid-August an X-ray was taken that showed that the socket had slippped about 40 degrees. The Sulzer rep did not believe this (until he saw the X-ray that is). On 25 August I had my revision. To this day, I cannot fully use my hip. Pain persists in the groin and back of leg. Putting full weight on it is useless. Needless to say, I am scheduled for a second revision shortly. THANK YOU SULZER for taking away this time of my life. My family really appreciates it. Mike 75 Year Old Mother Needs Revision after Pain and Suffering My mother, a very active 75 year old, had hip replacement surgery on 11-28-00. She seemed to progress well for 2 weeks. In the third week she had increased pain especially in the groin area to the point of being unable to go to the bathroom unassisted. She was wheelchair confined and sleeping in a recliner. The surgeon went out of town for the holidays but made us aware of the product recall. My mother's mobility deteriorated. My sisters and I took turns spending the night with our mother to facilitate her needs. On Christmas morning at 4 in the morning my mother informed me while attempting to use the bathroom that she wanted to die.(The pain was so great and it broke my heart!) The day after New Year's the surgeon was notified that my mother could not wait for her scheduled appointment and needed to be seen immediately. The revision was done on 01/05/01. This surgery has taken a much longer time for my mother to recuperate from. She needed extensive bone grafting and a bone was fractured trying to dislodge the faulty shell. My family and I are praying for Mom's recovery but remain extremely angry that these events occurred at all. This was the lady who took all the other ladies to their appointments because they no longer could. Sulzer has taken away our holiday memories, our mother's health, and undermined our confidence in health care. God help all those affected by Sulzer's product! Needs Revision Surgery Had surgery August 10th, 2000 I saw my Surgeon again, on January 26th, 2001 and he advised me my hip should be replaced and is scheduling me for surgery w/in the next two to three weeks. Arising from a sitting position really gives me a great deal of pain, putting weight on my hip or just standing presents me with pain. I also have pain in the groin. It really does bother me a great deal. Phillip Surprise, Arizona Has Recalled Shell I have one of the recalled inter-op shells from Sulzer Medica. I had a total hip replacement in September 2000 and want to know if I have any recourse in this situation. I may not need revision surgery, but only time will tell if I do. I am completely devastated and shocked. I am looking into what I need to do to protect myself in this situation.Thank you. -Lorrie 2 Surgeries in 4 months on 85 year old person. Recipient of the recalled Sulzer Orthopedics Shell with Pain Had surgery 2 May 2000 All symptoms described are in play (Acute pain in your inner thigh or groin, Pain when arising from a seated position pain withstanding. One month after surgery, the entire leg, groin area etc., felt as if I had pulled every muscle in the leg. Could not lift leg or do anything for approximately 6 weeks - after this I felt that the leg/hip was in worse condition than immediately after the operation. Recently received letter from surgeon indicating that I was a recipient of the recalled Sulzer Orthopedics Shell. -David Montross, Virginia Has Sulzer Hip Waiting for News I was born with a defective hip, had corrective surgery at 9 years old, by the time I was a teenager, arthritis set in. At 30 years old a doctor said "Come back when you can't walk, you're too young for hip replacement." At 39, I saw a new doctor who agreed to hip replacement with Sulzer's newest technology hip, surgey March 21, 2000, initially I did have alot of pain in my leg, thigh area. I was just told by my doctor my hip 'may' be one that is being recalled. I want to know when and if I will be notified, and I would like to know if it is not my hip, if that is the case. -David Problems with Sulzer products Total hip replacement for osteoarthritic condition in November 1999.
